Mr G. M. Sebastiampillai did his Bachelor of Arts (B.A) at the University of Mysore and his Master of Arts (M.A) at Annamalai University. His prolific research for his Master in Philosophy (M.Phil) submitted at the University of Jaffna in 1991 on ‘An Analysis of Social Change in Jaffna after Independence’ unearthed the complex transformations that took place in post-independence Jaffna. Many students refer to that thesis from the Archives at the Library, the University of Jaffna for their reading.

He remained an academic with a great deal of intellectual rigour and also impressed students with his reflective interpretations that ever touched both the contexts and the flow. His passion for Marxism ever revealed that he was always on the side of the ‘have nots’. His unique pedagogy in the lecture hall, ever with a book translated while reading, was academic and succinct. We picked up all that came out of his mouth in the classrooms. He extended his service as a lecturer at the South Eastern University, Oluvil too from 1999-2004.
